Included in Unesco's 2016 Cultural Heritage list, the extraordinary architecture of Le Corbusier’s Capitol Complex, designed by Chandigarh in 1951, has received accolades for its celebration of an independent nation open to modernity. The Haute Cour, along with the Secretariat and the Assemblée wing, make up the core of Chandigarh’s Capitol Complex. The rooms were filled with overstuffed armchairs, all exhibiting the same “V” support structure theme. The only exposed wooden parts are the rests, connecting crossbars, and the external joints between the arms and the backrest. The armrests’ padding almost completely envelops them, creating the outline of a rounded, geometric shape, that along with the distinct seat and back cushioning, offer an immediate sense of comfort without abandoning their elegance and simplicity. Cassina’s reissue offers the classic version in teak, and two versions in natural and stained black oak.

A timeless style that has written its own chapter in design history, becoming an icon of global fame. Designed for ease of conversation, the armchair was exhibited at the Salon d’Automne [Autumn Salon] in Paris in 1929 as the archetype of the modern concept of furnishings, interpreted by its authors as “household equipment”. The separation between the metal structure and the cushions is consistent with the principles of Rationalism, just as the separation between the parts is based on an industrial approach to production, reminiscent of the architectural relationship between the loadbearing structure and the in-fill elements. These models are also available in an eco-friendly version that stays true to the original design. Thanks to the study conducted by Cassina LAB, a partnership between the Cassina Research and Development Center and the Poli.design consortium of the Politecnico University in Milan, the foam-fill parts, the padding in the cushions and the tubular structure are produced with sustainable materials and processes.

With the various models of Fauteuil Grand Confort, grand modèle, the concept of modernity is expressed through the separation between the metal support frame and the upholstered elements. The loose cushions are set inside a painted or chrome-plated tubular steel cage that forms the primary support for the piece in all its variations ‒ from the armchair with armrest on one or both sides, to the two- and three-seat sofas. Over the years, Cassina has worked very closely with Charlotte Perriand, her daughter Pernette and the Fondation Le Corbusier to introduce new versions and finishes that, while reinterpreting the original design, remain faithful to its authentic nature. Among the all-time Cassina best-sellers, the Chaise longue à reglage continu is the quintessential chaise longue. Designed in 1928, it was based on a study of restful seating and epitomizes the concept of relaxation. It demonstrates the desire of the three authors to place the individual at the centre of their design project, expressing the absolute dovetailing of form and function by achieving the perfect balance between design purity and user comfort. The recliner’s stability, at any angle of inclination, is ensured through friction with the rubber tubes that sheathe the crosspieces on the base. This model has now been brought back in an all-black version, with black structure, recliner and upholstery.

An armchair with a striking, rigorous design, the outcome of research by Marco Zanuso on how to anchor a seat on a wood frame. Zanuso started work on this chair with his entry in an international design competition organised by the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1949. He returned to it in 1964, harnessing Arflex’s advanced technology. The wood frame is based on the geometry of the circle, which provides the chair's elegant formal aesthetic. Available in an iconic edition with a clear- varnished walnut frame, with the back panel in beige saddle leather, and the cushions in tobacco coloured leather.

Charlotte Perriand designed Ombra in 1953, taking as her reference her Ombra Tokyo, which was created round about the same time and featured curved plywood. The interplay between the object and its shadow (“ombra” in Italian) expresses Perriand’s aesthetic, where function is maximised while structure is minimised to conjure a design that is both highly inventive and exquisitely elegant. The strict geometric lines of the seat and back-rest slot perfectly one into the other, making them look as if they are one, continuous, piece. Perriand’s minimalist approach and artistic vigour are manifest in her drive for total comfort, in a piece that has been re-issued by Cassina in full respect of the original concept.

Ergonomically correct and exquisitely versatile, Cassina’s Wink armchair cleverly unfolds into a chaise-longue. “Sitting on Wink means sitting on the floor and, when you are seated there, according to oriental tradition, your spirit rises,” explains designer Toshiyuki Kita. Its proportions of-the- moment, Wink has a multi-functional mission with a pop look, and can be personalised in either leather, or in an ample array of fabrics and colours, with more added regularly. The back, and head-rest can be adjusted by means of the handles on the side, these being available in a range of shades to match the front and back legs.

Designed by Ico Parisi in 1960 for Cassina, at that time “Figli di Amedeo Cassina”, the 875 is a welcoming and elegant armchair. The author’s typical experimentation has led to a project that is both classic and modern at the same time. Its proportions, with its large seat and comfortable armrests, outline its solemn profile, while the original arched steel supports in different finishes - to which its shell is bound - and the contrast of different ma-terials make it eclectic, innovative and functional in any room of the house. The structure of the armchair, initially padded with foam rubber cut into sharp edges, has now been re-issued with polyurethane foam padding to maintain its linear shape. Both the seat and backrest are upholstered in fabric from the Cassina collections, as are the removable cushions.
