An evocative name and the idea of blending elements with different and seemingly incompatible essences into a single design sums up the Le Due Facce della Luna luxury flatware service by Afra and Tobia Scarpa. The result is a perfectly balanced blend of beauty and function that plays on the contrast between 925 Sterling silver, used for the handles, and the stainless-steel bowls, blades and tines. Designed in 1979 for the San Lorenzo Atelier in Milan, a masterpiece of creativity rediscovered and faithfully re-issued by Cassina. The cylindrical silver handles enhance the sensual luxury of the silver, while the blades of the razor-sharp knives and the flawlessly forged and minted forks and spoons deliver exquisite functionality.

The idea of comfort itself becomes an armchair. Soriana came into being in 1969, thanks to an intuitive vision by Afra and Tobia Scarpa that was destined to re-write the history of upholstered furniture. By taking advantage of new polyurethane foam forming techniques, they crafted an armchair that, for the first time, needs no internal support but takes its shape from the grip of the metal structure that embraces it. In the sweet spot between formal and informal, it is inviting and open to new lifestyles; in 1970 Soriana was awarded the Compasso d’Oro as a masterpiece of complexity achieved through simple tools. The internal padding based on BioFoam® microspheres, a bioplastic of plant origin, is the result of updating developed by Cassina and Tobia Scarpa as part of the Cassina LAB project to promote wellbeing and sustainable design. The seat’s comfort is further heightened thanks to a 100% recycled blown fibre padding produced from PET recovered from Plastic Bank®.

In 1967, Afra and Tobia Scarpa designed Carlotta for the Cassina Young Play program, a collection of sophisticated minimalist pieces designed to deliver casual comfort to a younger clientele. For Carlotta, the architects employed only four frames and a complex system of joints and finger joints. Their design simplicity highlights the skills of the Meda joinery in masterful wood craftsmanship, in this case, teak. The internal corners of the structure have the signature semi-circular cutouts that call to mind the intent of the original design to focus on optimizing the production process. The hand-woven support cords crisscross the frame, thanks to a twist in the wood produced with CNC machines, demonstrating the innovative content Cassina invests in the project. Carlotta is perfect outdoor seating for casual comfort, thanks to its cushions padded with recycled PET fiber.
