The constructional harmony of the Floe Insel sofa derives from the designer's in-depth exploration of the link between the volume and the softness of the cushions. Optimizing the relationship between the padding in these and the elasticated bands, flexibility and support become one. Each element incorporates an asymmetrical line, at an angle of 25 degrees from the horizontal, making it different and unique. The seats and backs, meanwhile, feature diagonal stitching that accentuates the sense of movement. The padded profile on the outer edges of the cushions and the armrests serve to reconfirm Cassina's mastery in executing the complex task of adapting linear stitching to an asymmetrical structure.

In designing Auckland, Jean Marie Massaud undertakes a restatement, in a contemporary key, of the classic lounge chair, which serves to reconfirm the original looks and comfort of this timeless classic. The seat of this swivel chair, available in black or white with optional foot-rest, is characterised by the seat’s shell-shaped structure, left deliberately exposed to evoke the armour worn by Kendo fighters. The shell protects the upholstered parts of the chair and is linked to the four-spoked base by a cantilevered metal support. This unusual arrangement confers a very faint, yet pleasurable, oscillating movement. The chair is complemented by a head-rest adjustable to eight height-options.

Designed by Ico Parisi in 1960 for Cassina, at that time “Figli di Amedeo Cassina”, the 875 is a welcoming and elegant armchair. The author’s typical experimentation has led to a project that is both classic and modern at the same time. Its proportions, with its large seat and comfortable armrests, outline its solemn profile, while the original arched steel supports in different finishes - to which its shell is bound - and the contrast of different ma-terials make it eclectic, innovative and functional in any room of the house. The structure of the armchair, initially padded with foam rubber cut into sharp edges, has now been re-issued with polyurethane foam padding to maintain its linear shape. Both the seat and backrest are upholstered in fabric from the Cassina collections, as are the removable cushions.

A timeless style that has written its own chapter in design history, becoming an icon of global fame. Designed for ease of conversation, the armchair was exhibited at the Salon d’Automne [Autumn Salon] in Paris in 1929 as the archetype of the modern concept of furnishings, interpreted by its authors as “household equipment”. The separation between the metal structure and the cushions is consistent with the principles of Rationalism, just as the separation between the parts is based on an industrial approach to production, reminiscent of the architectural relationship between the loadbearing structure and the in-fill elements. These models are also available in an eco-friendly version that stays true to the original design. Thanks to the study conducted by Cassina LAB, a partnership between the Cassina Research and Development Center and the Poli.design consortium of the Politecnico University in Milan, the foam-fill parts, the padding in the cushions and the tubular structure are produced with sustainable materials and processes.

The Göteborg chair is Erik Gunnar Asplund’s poetic interpretation of Rationalist ideas. The chair was commissioned for the extension of the Town Hall in Göteborg, Sweden, whose warm, wood-panelled rooms are evoked in its ashwood frame. The curved and slightly convex profile recalls Bauhaus designs. In this case, though, Asplund keeps the back and legs the same width. We also see an homage to the historic Thonet No. 14 chair, one of the early examples of industrially manufactured furniture.

The designers of Cotone and Cotone Slim took their cue from the great Cassina classics, and their skeleton frame that exemplifies the company's ability to produce highly expressive and exquisitely refined pieces year after year. The key to the design of Cotone is the strong contrast between the frame's rigorous, minimal line, which is made of aluminium with extruded profiles created exclusively for this piece, and the soft, welcoming look of the seat. The frame is available in a number of aluminium finishes, while the polyurethane padding is fitted with a soft and comfortable feather-quilted cover. The Cotone Slim, meantime, is supplied in leather or fabric, but without the feather-quilted cover.

An absolute masterpiece, this unparalleled model of formal beauty was the fruit of an epiphany on the part of Carlo Scarpa, the designer. The Orseolo table is constructed from sheets of MDF coated in a thick layer of mirror- shine or matte polyester lacquer; this is poured hot onto the wood surface and then brushed and polished using special machines. The linear panels are joined together with satin-finish cast aluminium fasteners, which serve a dual purpose. Both aesthetic and functional, they relieve the stress at the critical points of the table, and thus help preserve the beauty of the lacquer finish.

A coffee table in solid wood, extremely complex in terms of technology yet very simple in terms of design, this piece was created by Charlotte Perriand in 1969 for the Japanese embassy in Paris. The ideas for this table derives from the impact made on Perriand when she saw a colossal rock, whose enormous weight was undercut by the way the waves had eroded it, rendering it smooth. Thus the thick table-top and the concave edges, which enhance the beauty and serve to lighten the look. The contrast between the figurative impact and the rational perception of the real weight of the piece are what make it unique. Thanks to the meticulous manufacturing techniques employed, the table is able to withstand the risk of warping, which is the usual fate of wooden objects.

The Doron Hotel armchair was designed in 1947 by Charlotte Perriand, a real mountain lover, for the winter sports resort of Méribel Les Allues and for Hôtel Doron, one of the first chalet-hotels, in the same location. The French designer always had a special and profound relationship with nature; in fact, she was one of the first to explore the relationship between man and his surrounding environment, seeking natural materials to use in her projects. The Tramonto a New York sofa, reproduced in an exclusive limited series of 50 pieces, maintains all of its expressive power and the relevancy of the original 1980 design. A tribute to the designer’s adopted city and, at the same time, an admonition (later reconsidered by Pesce) about its impending decline. And much more. Tramonto a New York is a piece of furniture that aims to redeem the mere functionalism of the design expressing – clearly inspired by Pop Art – an obvious reflection on the contemporary vibe and identity of a metropolis synonymous with dynamism, revolution and energy. Therefore, a personal confession, embodied in a form that goes beyond the customary approach to seating and becomes architecture. Padding filled, individually crafted skyscrapers upholstered in an exclusive fabric whose raised rectangular texture places light and shadow side by side, creating the effect of light that reflects off the windows. In contrast, the setting sun, wrapped in vivid red satin, drops between the buildings that form the backrest. The elements have a plywood frame and elastic webbing and a structure in variable density natural rubber covered in recycled PET polyester batting, encased in fabric. Up-sized to a larger version than the historic original, Tramonto a New York is available in one size only, a three-seat sofa. To guarantee the authenticity of this special edition, each sofa bears a satin finish steel plate with the Cassina logo, the name of the design, the serial number and the name and signature of the artist, Gaetano Pesce. Like all new Cassina products, Tramonto a New York uses circular materials developed through the work of Cassina LAB.

Exord is a high-back swivel armchair designed for extraordinary comfort at home. Ergonomic in attitude and casual in appearance, it is part of the first project by American designer Jeffrey Bernett for Cassina. Its shape was engineered to lend support to the body, especially in the lumbar region and around the head. The shoulder area is lightly padded to provide additional soft support. Exord is sustainability oriented: with a view to upcycling, its components can be separated at the end of its life cycle. The rubber used in the armchair structure includes a percentage of plant-based polyols and the padding is made from recycled PET fiber recovered from Plastic Bank®. A matching footstool complements the armchair and an optional lumbar cushion is also available to ensure greater lumbar support when seated with the legs raised.

The backrest, with frame in painted AISI 304 stainless steel, is available in hand-woven rope with an exclusive design or in natural untreated willow, used here for the first time. The outstanding comfort of the armchair is guaranteed by the generous seat and backrest cushions with padding in SoloSoff(C), a blown polyester fibre and memory foam-based product, and the reclining backrest that can be set in two different positions thanks to a manual mechanism inspired by Asian architecture: a supporting rod in solid teak, processed to look like a branch, held in place by two wooden nails. The collection is completed by a two- and three-seater sofa and a side table in two different heights.

From the post-war period, Bodil Kjær opened up her home to a fresh new camaraderie encouraged by versatile furniture that translated the new domestic routines and a renewed need for comfort into tangible designs. Internationally known Danish architect, Bodil Kjær starts with a concept that acknowledges the user’s active contribution and their actual needs. This approach led, in 1955, to the High Back Chair, an armchair designed for pure comfort that encourages relaxing in front of the color TV (invented around that time) but, in the version with armrests, is also ideal for reading. Bodil Kjær placed a special focus on ergonomics: with a padded seat and angled lines that invite unexpected relaxation, the armchair took inspiration from Swedish research of the day on comfort in a world in rapid, ongoing transformation. Padding is in polyurethane foam and recycled PET fiber recovered from Plastic Bank®.

This eloquent small armchair is extremely reminiscent of 1970s design. Dudet is an architectural gem defined by three individual padded and upholstered elements – in one continuous line, a seat cushion and two tubular shapes smoothly combine to form the legs, armrests and backrest. The soft, comfortable appeal of the Dudet small armchair is dazzling but, beneath its enveloping curves, lies an environmentally aware spirit; it can be easily disassembled. An innovative system, with an eye to circularity, allows the metal core to be separated from the polyurethane foam padding produced with a percentage of polyols from biological sources. This facilitates differentiated disposal as well as recycling of the premium materials, starting with the steel core.
