Charlotte Perriand started work on the tables en forme libre in 1938. Originally intended for her own atelier in the Montparnasse area of central Paris, they went into production courtesy of Galerie Steph Simon at the end of the 1950s. All rounded edges, and asymmetrical lines, these tables are perfectly suited to accommodating up to eight guests in small spaces. The table has three legs: one is oval with a wider footprint, the other two are smaller and are cylinder-shaped. In 2011, Cassina re-issued this piece, reducing the width of the legs to offer more space and allow guests to sit closer to each other on convivial occasions. Supplied in mahogany solid wood, the table also comes with a gloss or matte varnished finish, in the Cassina Moodboard colours. The table-top is composed of wooden staves that slot into each other, the joins being seen at the ends, testifying to the Cassina company’s exceptional carpentry skills; any variations in the wood are part of the very nature of the raw material and serve to highlight its inherent beauty.

Starting in 1928, Charlotte Perriand designed a series of free-form tables for her studio in Montparnasse. Delfi forms part of the Ultrarazionale collection, which was launched in 1968, and is composed of sculptural pieces designed by Carlo Scarpa, typified by his signature attention to detail and choice of materials. This table is a re- design of a Rationalist model created by Marcel Breuer in the 1930s for Dino Gavina’s residence in Bologna. At the end of the 1960s, Scarpa began to re- examine the original concept, effecting some variations, in agreement with the designer. In 2009, Tobia Scarpa, Carlo Scarpa’s son, suggested yet another variation: this time, a glass table-top so as to highlight the elegant brass supports and the fluting on the marble bases, the better to see the formal elegance of the piece.

This piece is the outcome of Theodore Waddell’s exploration, in 1956, of how to design tables with extremely light frames, and takes its inspiration from the architecture of tensile structures. Waddell studied the systems patented by Buckminster Fuller and, in 1972, created a type of configuration for Cassina where, for the first time ever, it proved possible to create furniture using suspension cables. The frame of these tables consists of six legs, of which three do not touch the floor, but provide support for the glass table- top. Meanwhile, the others touch the floor, but not the table-top. The result, extremely elegant and striking sculptural, is evocative of molecular structure.

The Tramonto a New York sofa, reproduced in an exclusive limited series of 50 pieces, maintains all of its expressive power and the relevancy of the original 1980 design. A tribute to the designer’s adopted city and, at the same time, an admonition (later reconsidered by Pesce) about its impending decline. And much more. Tramonto a New York is a piece of furniture that aims to redeem the mere functionalism of the design expressing – clearly inspired by Pop Art – an obvious reflection on the contemporary vibe and identity of a metropolis synonymous with dynamism, revolution and energy. Therefore, a personal confession, embodied in a form that goes beyond the customary approach to seating and becomes architecture. Padding filled, individually crafted skyscrapers upholstered in an exclusive fabric whose raised rectangular texture places light and shadow side by side, creating the effect of light that reflects off the windows. In contrast, the setting sun, wrapped in vivid red satin, drops between the buildings that form the backrest. The elements have a plywood frame and elastic webbing and a structure in variable density natural rubber covered in recycled PET polyester batting, encased in fabric. Up-sized to a larger version than the historic original, Tramonto a New York is available in one size only, a three-seat sofa. To guarantee the authenticity of this special edition, each sofa bears a satin finish steel plate with the Cassina logo, the name of the design, the serial number and the name and signature of the artist, Gaetano Pesce. Exord is a high-back swivel armchair designed for extraordinary comfort at home. Ergonomic in attitude and casual in appearance, it is part of the first project by American designer Jeffrey Bernett for Cassina. Its shape was engineered to lend support to the body, especially in the lumbar region and around the head. The shoulder area is lightly padded to provide additional soft support. Exord is sustainability oriented: with a view to upcycling, its components can be separated at the end of its life cycle. The rubber used in the armchair structure includes a percentage of plant-based polyols and the padding is made from recycled PET fiber recovered from Plastic Bank®. A matching footstool complements the armchair and an optional lumbar cushion is also available to ensure greater lumbar support when seated with the legs raised.

The outstanding comfort of the armchair is guaranteed by the generous seat and backrest cushions with padding in SoloSoff(C), a blown polyester fibre and memory foam-based product, and the reclining backrest that can be set in two different positions thanks to a manual mechanism inspired by Asian architecture: a supporting rod in solid teak, processed to look like a branch, held in place by two wooden nails. The collection is completed by a two- and three-seater sofa and a side table in two different heights.

From the post-war period, Bodil Kjær opened up her home to a fresh new camaraderie encouraged by versatile furniture that translated the new domestic routines and a renewed need for comfort into tangible designs. Internationally known Danish architect, Bodil Kjær starts with a concept that acknowledges the user’s active contribution and their actual needs. This approach led, in 1955, to the High Back Chair, an armchair designed for pure comfort that encourages relaxing in front of the color TV (invented around that time) but, in the version with armrests, is also ideal for reading. Bodil Kjær placed a special focus on ergonomics: with a padded seat and angled lines that invite unexpected relaxation, the armchair took inspiration from Swedish research of the day on comfort in a world in rapid, ongoing transformation. Padding is in polyurethane foam and recycled PET fiber recovered from Plastic Bank®.

This eloquent small armchair is extremely reminiscent of 1970s design. Dudet is an architectural gem defined by three individual padded and upholstered elements – in one continuous line, a seat cushion and two tubular shapes smoothly combine to form the legs, armrests and backrest. The soft, comfortable appeal of the Dudet small armchair is dazzling but, beneath its enveloping curves, lies an environmentally aware spirit; it can be easily disassembled. An innovative system, with an eye to circularity, allows the metal core to be separated from the polyurethane foam padding produced with a percentage of polyols from biological sources. This facilitates differentiated disposal as well as recycling of the premium materials, starting with the steel core.

The simple geometry of the structure is warmer and closer to nature in the walnut or ashwood, and is thus ideal for the home environment. The innovative approach used to assemble the leather sections reveals a clever configuration of cuts and folds that highlight the company’s crafts capabilities. Meticulous attention has been paid to the chair’s functional aspects, primarily through the use of a thermoformed plastic shell coupled with a thin layer of polyurethane. The wood chair par excellence – one of the flagship pieces in the partnership between Gio Ponti, Cesare Cassina and the company’s joinery experts – adds a new outdoor version. An icon that has evolved over time while staying true to the original design and principles of lightness and functionality that shaped its archetypal ethos, the Leggera moves outside in a version crafted with a cutting-edge technique, used here for the first time. The wood version challenged the experience and skills of the Cassina joinery to pare the chair’s structure down to its essence. Similarly, the same lightness and purity of Leggera is expressed in a material suited to the outdoors: stainless steel. To accomplish this, Cassina borrowed from a Formula One automotive production process. Crucial in-depth research and development analyses led to the use of hydroforming, a construction technique found in the single-seater, to accurately replicate the original model of the chair, preserving its distinctive aesthetics and emblematic lightness. Unlike the traditional casting techniques, this intricate method expands the thin curved tubular steel from its interior outward to give the structure its shape. In a series of processes, each tube is inserted into a closed mould where, thanks to the pressure exerted by a liquid on the inside, it is pressed and moulded, filling out its shape. The individual components are then carefully welded together. Leggera Outdoor comes in three colours: ivory, mud and green. The seat comes in both the colour mud and in woven cord and, to ensure greater comfort, optional upholstered seat and backrest cushions are available.Thanks to the work carried out by Cassina LAB, the Leggera Outdoor chair can be completely disassembled and all of its components recycled at the end of the product’s life cycle, in a more eco-friendly, respectful approach to the environment.
