Cassina in collaboration with Ginori 1735 and the Le Corbusier Foundation. Cassina takes its inspiration from the genius of Le Corbusier for a collection of three trays in pure, unglazed porcelain. These trays borrow some of the bas-relief symbols chosen for the walls of the buildings of Chandigarh, the city designed in the 1950s and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The same procedure can be seen in Marseille in the Unité d’Habitation on the sculptures moulées, symbolic designs embedded by Le Corbusier in the concrete – béton brut – taken from his figurative portfolio. Each tray, made by Ginori 1735, includes a design sketched by the Master in 1956: the open hand symbolising peace (square tray with rounded corners), the fish (round tray), the movement of the sun (rectangular tray).

This wooden screen is based on an original tempera and pencil sketch on paper by artist Giacomo Balla. Today, Cassina revives this brightly coloured accessory to divide and complete the various areas of the house with a real artistic touch. The Balla Screen consists of three honeycomb panels of different heights and widths joined together by brushed brass double-action hinges specially designed by Cassina, carefully interpreting the original design. The silk- screen printed decoration, on both sides, is available in two versions, with orange background in the colours yellow and green, respecting the shades in the Balla sketch, and with white background in the colours blue and green. The Balla Screen, part of the Cassina I Maestri Collection, bears the signature of the designer and a serial number which guarantees the authenticity of the product.

An inventive modular sofa, with soft, inviting curves that bespeak comfort to the max and extreme versatility. The rounded arm-rests curve to meet the back, the shape expressing the crafts excellence synonymous with Cassina’s crafts expertise, more evidence of which can be seen in the upholstery edge-stitching that delineates the lines of the various elements. The sofa is composed of single units that have been conceived as if they were tiny sculptures, so they work equally well as part of a team or as stand-alones. The metal frame is upholstered in injected expanded polyurethane foam, with Dacron covers, to provide a generous and comfortable seat. The 1970s’ inspiration comes through also in the low tables that reflect the sofa’s soft profile, the painted frame meeting the elegant material quality of the wooden table-top. Designed to work together, one over the other, or abutting each other, these tables can be used to break up the lines of the sofa, but are equally at home as stand-alone coffee tables.

The AEO chair was the last product from the Archizoom group, and was designed by Paolo Deganello in 1973 as an unconventional interpretation of a contemporary armchair. Using experimental materials, the piece was originally available for self-assembly. A wide array of upholstery options were on offer, which enhanced the chair’s potential for personalisation. The quintessence of functionality and versatility, AEO is thus typical of a Cassina piece, since it can be taken apart and washed, while being light and comfortable, the perfect partner for any space and style.

The Black Red and Blue (Zeilmaker version) born from Rietveld’s chromatic experimentation. While researching the origins of the Red and Blue model in collaboration with the Rietveld heirs, it emerged that the key idea of the first prototypes was based on the concept of spatial organisation expressed through the monochrome tones of its elements. The first version was in fact produced in 1918 in completely unpainted wood. In the following years Rietveld proposed various examples, either monochrome or painted in different colours, depending on the requirements of his customers and the interiors for which the chairs were intended. As such, it comes as no surprise to find this 1920s version, presented as part of Cassina’s MutAzioni selection, created for the school teacher Wicher Zeilmaker with a black frame with white ends and a dark green painted seat and backrest. It was Rietveld’s ever-increasing involvement in the De Stijl movement that led him to also use primary colours on this model in 1923, and as such the chair became a veritable manifesto for the emerging neoplastic movement. Initially dubbed Slat chair, Rietveld only gave it the name Red and Blue in the 1950s following its chromatic evolution. The various owners of the different examples used the chair as an abstract- realist sculpture in their interiors and, in some cases, as a simple tool for sitting on, adding cushions to make it more comfortable, just like Cassina offers for the Black Red and Blue today.

Maralunga is an emblematic armchair of the iContemporanei collection by Cassina, the work of architect and industrial designer Vico Magistretti. Winner of the Compasso d’Oro in 1979, Maralunga is the embodiment of the very idea of comfort, with an adjustable headrest for a high or low backrest version obtained by inserting a simple bicycle chain inside the foam of the backrest. The model comes as an armchair, two- or three-seater sofas in diff erent widths, and pouf. To mark its 40th anniversary, Cassina presents a new interpretation with fabric or leather upholstery and distinctive profi le stitching, to make it even more modern and contemporary, also available with removable cover.

Included in Unesco's 2016 Cultural Heritage list, the extraordinary architecture of Le Corbusier’s Capitol Complex, designed by Chandigarh in 1951, has received accolades for its celebration of an independent nation open to modernity. The Haute Cour, along with the Secretariat and the Assemblée wing, make up the core of Chandigarh’s Capitol Complex. The rooms were filled with overstuffed armchairs, all exhibiting the same “V” support structure theme. The only exposed wooden parts are the rests, connecting crossbars, and the external joints between the arms and the backrest. The armrests’ padding almost completely envelops them, creating the outline of a rounded, geometric shape, that along with the distinct seat and back cushioning, offer an immediate sense of comfort without abandoning their elegance and simplicity. Cassina’s reissue offers the classic version in teak, and two versions in natural and stained black oak.

Charlotte Perriand designed Ombra in 1953, taking as her reference her Ombra Tokyo, which was created round about the same time and featured curved plywood. The interplay between the object and its shadow (“ombra” in Italian) expresses Perriand’s aesthetic, where function is maximised while structure is minimised to conjure a design that is both highly inventive and exquisitely elegant. The strict geometric lines of the seat and back-rest slot perfectly one into the other, making them look as if they are one, continuous, piece. Perriand’s minimalist approach and artistic vigour are manifest in her drive for total comfort, in a piece that has been re-issued by Cassina in full respect of the original concept.

An icon of 1950s’ Italian Design, the armchair-sofa Lady stands out for its extraordinarily contemporary construction, a symbol of innovation supreme, in terms of style, materials, and technology. In addition to being the first armchair to incorporate expanded polyurethane and foam rubber, the armchair’s seat showcased a new system of springing, using reinforced elastic straps to ensure premier comfort; meanwhile the slender, slim-line metal legs showcase the design’s lightness of touch. The structure is contained in the seat, the back, and the arms, the outcome being a veritable masterpiece of Italian furniture design excellence; so much so that Lady was awarded the Gold Medal at the IX Milan Triennale, in 1951. This throne-like armchair is a new iteration of the model that CRM donated, in 1904, to the “Willow Tea Rooms” in Glasgow, his native city. The tall semi- circular back served to separate the entrance area from the tea-room behind it. The back encompasses the seat, illustrating to perfection Mackintosh’s geometric and Art Nouveau style. For Cassina, creating this chair meant marrying advanced technology and the company’s premier carpentry skills. The latter can be seen in the precision needed to assemble the components that make up the elegant, light-weight latticed frame.

This swivel armchair is a re-working of the LC7, whose frame was in tubular metal, and was the work of Charlotte Perriand in 1927. It was later exhibited along with other furniture that Perriand co-designed with Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret for the 1929 Salon d’Automne in Paris. The original design was executed in Vietnam in 1943, using the materials and crafts techniques available during that war-time period. The first model had three legs, with a fourth added later. This piece reflects the designer’s flexible and resourceful approach: she often adapted her designs according to the availability of materials and where production was to take place. Cassina has re-issued Indochine in the full respect of the original design, interpreting it, and incorporating a solid wood base that highlights the excellence of the company craftsmen’s wood-working skills.

The Infinito bookcase, designed in 1956/7 by Franco Albini, has expanded to include a new fixed to the wall version with a different and more stable floor support. This model was developed - in constant collaboration with the Maestro’s heirs - taking as its main reference a project designed by Albini himself together with Franca Helg in 1958, now on show at the Albini Foundation headquarters, together with drawings made for its reissue by the company Poggi. Infinito Wall is an even more contemporary and functional bookcase: thanks to the insertion of a low upright it is possible to add a dedicated storage unit with doors to create a compartment above that can hold a TV screen up to 65" with a 165cm shelf above it. The new cupboard can be equipped for the passage of cables, maintaining visual order and lightness; the doors are also available in smoked glass for the bookcase in stained black ash. With the introduction of these new modules, the hinges have also been updated to allow door adjustment and cushioned closure.

Franco Albini designed this table using the strut element that he had already employed in the design of the Veliero and Infinito bookshelves. In this instance, the legs serve as the vertical elements, solid, turned along their entire surface except for the square section onto which the horizontal table- top is installed. The upturned wooden cones that surmount each leg act as spacers between the cross-beams of the frame and the table-top which, given how light it looks, almost seems to hang suspended in mid-air. The connection between the legs and the cross-pieces is highlighted by visible screws. These remind us that the TL3 table can be disassembled. Cassina’s revisitation of this table, effected in collaboration with the Fondazione Albini, is based on archive drawings and includes the use of a glass table-top so that the impeccable carpentry details can be seen more clearly.

The respective Mexique table is included as one of the tables en forme libre created between 1938 and 1939, the final design was developed in 1952 for the students’ rooms of the Maison du Mexique at the Cité Universitaire Internationale in Paris. With a frame designed to be as compact as possible, the tables could be juxtaposed to create larger, symmetrical units. In 1952, the wooden legs were replaced by triangular-section bent metal. In 1956, the low-level version was created for the Galerie Steph Simon in Paris. The generous depth of the wooden table-top, available in solid wood, as well as with a gloss or matte finish, resonates with rare beauty. Meanwhile, form follows function in the edges form, reflecting the size of the human hand. In 2018, two new dining table variants of the Mexique are being launched, designed to accommodate between five and six guests. In addition, a number of new finishes enhance further the potential for these tables to work together and serve new purposes.

Both pieces are inspired by the mountains. While the latter takes its name from the milking-stool used by alpine shepherds, the former is inspired by the French locality much loved by designer and architect Charlotte Perriand. These furnishing accessories stand out for the honesty of their simple shapes and for the concrete expression of their materials and function. The turned seat meets the stylised legs both in the Tabouret Berger, a lower version with three legs in hand-turned solid wood, and in the taller Tabouret Méribel, which has three angular legs. Produced by Cassina thanks to a meticulous work of craftsmanship that respects the authenticity of the original design, these small masterpieces can be used on their own or in creative compositions. The use of solid wood communicates a pleasant sense of softness, and we see the continuity of the grain right the way across the seat to the borders, nature creating a unique pattern on each.

An entire room for sale, a faithful reproduction of a student room in the Maison du Brésil, inaugurated in 1959 at the Cité Internationale of the University of Paris. In the early 1950s, the Brazilian government commissioned the design from the architect Lucio Costa, who in turn brought Le Corbusier on board, over time handing over more responsibility, to the point that the latter eventually signed off the building design. Le Corbusier’s office revised a number of key elements, and then brought in Charlotte Perriand to help with the interiors. The way Le Corbusier saw it, the wardrobe would separate the entrance hall and the bathroom block from the bedroom and study areas. Charlotte Perriand, on the other hand, took a more rationalist view, favouring the idea of having the wardrobe accessible from more than one side. For the bed frame, solid wood was preferred to metal, with a mattress and bolster. The apartment also included a wall-hung bookcase and blackboard, as well as the Tabouret Maison du Bresil, already available in Cassina Collection.

An icon with an aptitude for versatility and functionality designed in 1927 by Charlotte Perriand for her Paris atelier in Place Saint-Sulpice. The design was first exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs [Decorative Artists Show] in 1928 and then at the Salon d'Automne [Autumn Salon] in 1929, and is now part of the Le Corbusier®, Pierre Jeanneret®, Charlotte Perriand® Collection. The swivel armchair features backrest and seat cushion padded in polyurethane foam and polyester batting, with fabric upholstery. The original, historic model was created in 1937 for Charlotte Perriand's workshop in Montparnasse. The base consisted of three circular legs joined by crosspieces which supported the tabletop. This, as the name implied, was interchangeable. A project designed to be used in various ways; in fact, the model would be used in many of Perriand's other subsequent projects, from the Japanese-inspired projects of the 1940s, with tops or woven trays made with local materials, to the living rooms of the Unité d'Habitation flats in Marseille. The Table à Plateau Interchangeable, today part of the Cassina I Maestri Collection, has also been developed for outdoor use. The outdoor version, in two sizes like the indoor model, has a solid teak structure and top in Carrara marble with oil-water finish.

Therefore, a personal confession, embodied in a form that goes beyond the customary approach to seating and becomes architecture. Padding filled, individually crafted skyscrapers upholstered in an exclusive fabric whose raised rectangular texture places light and shadow side by side, creating the effect of light that reflects off the windows. In contrast, the setting sun, wrapped in vivid red satin, drops between the buildings that form the backrest. The elements have a plywood frame and elastic webbing and a structure in variable density natural rubber covered in recycled PET polyester batting, encased in fabric. Up-sized to a larger version than the historic original, Tramonto a New York is available in one size only, a three-seat sofa. To guarantee the authenticity of this special edition, each sofa bears a satin finish steel plate with the Cassina logo, the name of the design, the serial number and the name and signature of the artist, Gaetano Pesce. Like all new Cassina products, Tramonto a New York uses circular materials developed through the work of Cassina LAB.

Ergonomic in attitude and casual in appearance, it is part of the first project by American designer Jeffrey Bernett for Cassina. Its shape was engineered to lend support to the body, especially in the lumbar region and around the head. The shoulder area is lightly padded to provide additional soft support. Exord is sustainability oriented: with a view to upcycling, its components can be separated at the end of its life cycle. The rubber used in the armchair structure includes a percentage of plant-based polyols and the padding is made from recycled PET fiber recovered from Plastic Bank®. A matching footstool complements the armchair and an optional lumbar cushion is also available to ensure greater lumbar support when seated with the legs raised.
