Specifications:
The idea of comfort itself becomes an armchair. Soriana came into being in 1969, thanks to an intuitive vision by Afra and Tobia Scarpa that was destined to re-write the history of upholstered furniture. By taking advantage of new polyurethane foam forming techniques, they crafted an armchair that, for the first time, needs no internal support but takes its shape from the grip of the metal structure that embraces it. In the sweet spot between formal and informal, it is inviting and open to new lifestyles; in 1970 Soriana was awarded the Compasso d’Oro as a masterpiece of complexity achieved through simple tools. The internal padding based on BioFoam® microspheres, a bioplastic of plant origin, is the result of updating developed by Cassina and Tobia Scarpa as part of the Cassina LAB project to promote wellbeing and sustainable design. The seat’s comfort is further heightened thanks to a 100% recycled blown fibre padding produced from PET recovered from Plastic Bank®.
Collection: Mario Bellini
Brand: Cassina
Specifications:
The bold, self-assured lines of this iconic sofa by Mario Bellini bear witness to the unlimited creative verve of the 1970s. During that same decade, Bellini devised the Libro dell’Arredamento, which launched a contemporary lexicon of design keyed on the primary function of the furniture illustrated. One outcome was a major experimental initiative conducted in association with the Cassina company’s Research Unit that led to the creation of Duc. This highly original and far-reaching design was based on the application of innovative materials to structural technology. The Duc sofa is composed of steel-framed panels in a state-of-the-art high- density polyurethane foam that are hooked on to the base and are then zipped together, top to bottom, on each side. The collection includes an armchair, as well as two-and three-seater sofas, all of them very sophisticated and extremely comfortable.

Collection: Marco Zanuso
Brand: Cassina
Specifications:
An armchair with a striking, rigorous design, the outcome of research by Marco Zanuso on how to anchor a seat on a wood frame. Zanuso started work on this chair with his entry in an international design competition organised by the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1949. He returned to it in 1964, harnessing Arflex’s advanced technology. The wood frame is based on the geometry of the circle, which provides the chair's elegant formal aesthetic. Available in an iconic edition with a clear- varnished walnut frame, with the back panel in beige saddle leather, and the cushions in tobacco coloured leather.

Specifications:
“This was a new kind of chair, constructed totally out of leather, much cloned since then.” Thus Mario Bellini describes Cab, a best-seller that he designed in the 1970s, which is now a signature piece in Cassina’s I Contemporanei collection. Cab was the first-ever chair to feature a free-standing leather structure, inspired by how our skin fits over our skeleton. The upholstery consists of sixteen pieces of saddle leather. Individually die-cut, they then undergo fourteen discrete procedures, again by hand. The pieces are sewn together only when their outer edges have been trimmed to ensure a perfect fit. Once assembled, the cover is attached to the chair’s steel skeleton and held in place by means of a zipper fastening, as in a bespoke tailored garment. Cab is available in a wide variety of colours.
Collection: Gerrit Thomas Rietveld
Brand: Cassina
Specifications:
Designed by Gerrit Rietveld, this chair provided an early example of a cantilevered seat, and is composed of four wood boards articulated end-to-end to form an extremely eye-catching example of an unstable structure. Eschewing the traditional legs-seat-back sequence, Rietveld created a ribbon of wood forming a Z-shape. The crafts mastery of Cassina’s carpenters is seen in the execution of the dove-tail joints, which add to the beauty of the piece. The aesthetic uniqueness of this piece can be seen particularly well in the coloured version, its open-pore finish highlighting the veins of the wood on the front and sides. This finish reflects a number of variations on the theme made by Rietveld, designed to highlight the relationship between the vertical, oblique and horizontal lines.

A low-armed dining chair that is as comfortable as an armchair proper, elegantly extends an invitation to sit and relax; a brand-new slim-line version is also now available. The designers of Cotone and Cotone Slim took their cue from the great Cassina classics, and their skeleton frame that exemplifies the company's ability to produce highly expressive and exquisitely refined pieces year after year. The key to the design of Cotone is the strong contrast between the frame's rigorous, minimal line, which is made of aluminium with extruded profiles created exclusively for this piece, and the soft, welcoming look of the seat. The frame is available in a number of aluminium finishes, while the polyurethane padding is fitted with a soft and comfortable feather-quilted cover. The Cotone Slim, meantime, is supplied in leather or fabric, but without the feather-quilted cover.

Light, slender and stackable, the Gaja chair is a contemporary object that makes constant reference to the pure classic inspiration of Rationalism. The open structure, wrought from chrome-finished resistance-welded steel rods, was designed with a small restaurant in mind, and later became part of the SimonCollezione thanks to its versatile and functional character. The Gaja chair is available with a padded back-rest, as well as in a stool option, both being perfect for soft contract applications. This chair has now been completely redeveloped and further improved by reinforcing the seat with a thermoformed seat and backrest with elastic straps, as well as inserting a wadding cover and zip that allows the upholstery to be removed. New frame finishes are also available.
Collection: Carlo Scarpa
Brand: Cassina
Specifications:
A veritable masterpiece of the Italian design tradition, this sculpture-like table became, in the late-1960s, the emblem of the “Ultrarazionale” movement which, shrugging off the restraints imposed by the Rationalists, aimed to re- embrace traditional aesthetic values. Part of Cassina’s Simon Collection, the Doge table has been revisited with new textures and new materials. The architectural aluminium or satin-finish steel base, set off by the flat wide profiles, is the essential part of the table, while the elegantly refined mechanism linking top to base can be seen from above, through the glass of the table top. The new-look Doge table is available in five sizes, all taking their cue from Carlo Scarpa’s original design, with the table top being available in float-glass as well as white Carrara or black Marquiña marble.

Collection: Franco Albini
Brand: Cassina
Specifications:
Dubbed Cicognino, or “little stork”, this iconic design, is clean-cut and refined, witty yet reassuringly familiar. Franco Albini designed this table by reducing the frame to its essentials: the three slender legs, a table-top 40cm in diameter, and a wooden trim that makes it reminiscent of a tray. One of the three legs extends higher than the others, ending as a handle that can be used for moving the table about. Meantime, the table-top serves as a link between the other parts, augmenting the overall sense of balance and stability. The attention to detail and the unusual shape make this a highly expressive piece with an accomplished style that plays well in any context.
Collection: Meret Oppenheim
Brand: Cassina
Specifications:
In 1971, Dino Gavino launched what he called “l’opera d’arte funzionale”, or functional artworks, in so doing inaugurating a new approach of furnishing where surreal objects were adapted for everyday use. This led to the creation of the Ultramobile collection. These pieces, that went beyond (ultra) furniture (mobile) engaged the imagination, complementing rational intelligence with a sense of wonder, where geometry interacted with fantasy. One of these pieces was the low table that the Swiss artist Meret Oppenheim designed in 1929 for Leo Castelli’s avant-garde gallery, dubbing it the “Bird Leg Table”, for fairly obvious reasons. The slim-line legs, and the taloned feet in polished cast bronze pay homage to the claw-foot furniture of the past. In the 1970s, the Simon International company produced a limited edition in a smaller size. This has now been re-released by Cassina, fully respecting the original design.

Versatile and functional, with a metal frame, Sail Out offers an infinite variety of combinations thanks to the 3 seat modules available - with 5, 6 or 7 bands - and the three additional elements: the teak side table and the armrest/backrest, available in two heights, are interchangeable thanks to a joint mechanism on the teak panels of the frame that is reminiscent of car headrests. The sofa is enriched with a round pouf, in two sizes, consisting of segments that converge towards a little hidden hole designed to drain off water. A weighted cushion on the pouf can be used as an armrest or to support a tray. A low side table completes the collection.

Cassina in collaboration with Venini. The English designer Bethan Laura Wood interprets the synthesis between the centenary art of Murano glass and contemporary design with a fruit bowl and a cylindrical flower vase, produced by Venini. The vases’ structure is in lacquered brass (available in two finishes in light shades) to which decorative glass is fixed through two brass elements; the individual tiles are cast in metal moulds and coloured thanks to the overlapping of two dots of colour from the Venini Archive, in a special colour combination depending on the size. Inside the structure it is possible to insert an optional blown glass vase in amber or horizon blue to offer an additional pool of colour to the object while also allowing it to be more easily filled with water for flowers.

The Sahara rug is born from a contemporary reinterpretation of the Berber rugs of the Nomad dessert tribes on which primitive, rapid and instinctive marks have been drawn. The intent is not decorative, but the production acquires a symbolic harmony that unites space creating a complete connection. The woolly softness of the rug becomes a welcoming place where you can sit, practice sport or observe the outside from a new point of view. TANTRA The Tantra rug stems from the hand loom technique, in which production is carried out on a loom using entirely manual processes. Its geometric pattern, obtained by repeating a simple pattern memorized by the weaver, recalls the rigorous and accurate decorations that can be seen in many Indian temples where colour is used in a formal manner. Available in grey and blue-grey in a yarn made with a mix of viscose and recycled PET.

Designed in 1928, it was based on a study of restful seating and epitomizes the concept of relaxation. It demonstrates the desire of the three authors to place the individual at the centre of their design project, expressing the absolute dovetailing of form and function by achieving the perfect balance between design purity and user comfort. The recliner’s stability, at any angle of inclination, is ensured through friction with the rubber tubes that sheathe the crosspieces on the base. This model has now been brought back in an all-black version, with black structure, recliner and upholstery.

Collection: Charlotte Perriand
Brand: Cassina
Specifications:
Currently available in just one size, the Rio low table was originally created by Charlotte Perriand as two. Between 1962, the year she designed the piece and 1967, Charlotte Perriand made a larger version intended for the Japanese embassy in Paris. The unusual beauty of the Rio table, matched by its functionality make it a veritable work of art. The six segments, made in solid wood, each with a different radius, offset from each other, create a jagged outer edge, while the hole in the centre evokes a centre of gravity. Cassina re-issued the original version in 1962, reproducing the original lines, thanks also to the extraordinary crafts skills of the artisans of Meda, a town in the Brianza area north of Milan.
