From the post-war period, Bodil Kjær opened up her home to a fresh new camaraderie encouraged by versatile furniture that translated the new domestic routines and a renewed need for comfort into tangible designs. Internationally known Danish architect, Bodil Kjær starts with a concept that acknowledges the user’s active contribution and their actual needs. This approach led, in 1955, to the High Back Chair, an armchair designed for pure comfort that encourages relaxing in front of the color TV (invented around that time) but, in the version with armrests, is also ideal for reading. Bodil Kjær placed a special focus on ergonomics: with a padded seat and angled lines that invite unexpected relaxation, the armchair took inspiration from Swedish research of the day on comfort in a world in rapid, ongoing transformation. Padding is in polyurethane foam and recycled PET fiber recovered from Plastic Bank®.

Included in Unesco's 2016 Cultural Heritage list, the extraordinary architecture of Le Corbusier’s Capitol Complex, designed by Chandigarh in 1951, has received accolades for its celebration of an independent nation open to modernity. The Haute Cour, along with the Secretariat and the Assemblée wing, make up the core of Chandigarh’s Capitol Complex. The rooms were filled with overstuffed armchairs, all exhibiting the same “V” support structure theme. The only exposed wooden parts are the rests, connecting crossbars, and the external joints between the arms and the backrest. The armrests’ padding almost completely envelops them, creating the outline of a rounded, geometric shape, that along with the distinct seat and back cushioning, offer an immediate sense of comfort without abandoning their elegance and simplicity. Cassina’s reissue offers the classic version in teak, and two versions in natural and stained black oak.

A timeless style that has written its own chapter in design history, becoming an icon of global fame. Designed for ease of conversation, the armchair was exhibited at the Salon d’Automne [Autumn Salon] in Paris in 1929 as the archetype of the modern concept of furnishings, interpreted by its authors as “household equipment”. The separation between the metal structure and the cushions is consistent with the principles of Rationalism, just as the separation between the parts is based on an industrial approach to production, reminiscent of the architectural relationship between the loadbearing structure and the in-fill elements. These models are also available in an eco-friendly version that stays true to the original design. Thanks to the study conducted by Cassina LAB, a partnership between the Cassina Research and Development Center and the Poli.design consortium of the Politecnico University in Milan, the foam-fill parts, the padding in the cushions and the tubular structure are produced with sustainable materials and processes.

With the various models of Fauteuil Grand Confort, grand modèle, the concept of modernity is expressed through the separation between the metal support frame and the upholstered elements. The loose cushions are set inside a painted or chrome-plated tubular steel cage that forms the primary support for the piece in all its variations ‒ from the armchair with armrest on one or both sides, to the two- and three-seat sofas. Over the years, Cassina has worked very closely with Charlotte Perriand, her daughter Pernette and the Fondation Le Corbusier to introduce new versions and finishes that, while reinterpreting the original design, remain faithful to its authentic nature. These models are also available in an eco-friendly version. The recliner’s stability, at any angle of inclination, is ensured through friction with the rubber tubes that sheathe the crosspieces on the base. This model has now been brought back in an all-black version, with black structure, recliner and upholstery.
