Gerrit Rietveld came up with the design for the Utrecht armchair in 1935 while working for the Metz & Co. department store in Amsterdam, where his brief was to make a chair for serial production. Taking market needs into account, while privileging a comfortable and relaxing experience, led to the elements of the chair being treated as separate units. As a consequence, the chair became an icon of both the Neoplastic movement (aka De Stijl), and of Rietveld’s experimental vision. In 2015, the original version of the chair, without the feet, was made available alongside the one with, as part of the Mutazioni collection, and was relaunched with its dimensions adjusted to take account of changes in people’s height over the previous 80 years. The chair is also available in the Gerrit fabric, with blanket stich or zig-zag top-stitching, in both cases in five colours.

Patricia Urquiola interprets the happiness of outdoor life with a high-impact product inspired by the little trampolines found in the gardens of homes in Greenland. The supporting structure is made from seasoned beech. The vegetable horsehair of the backrest and armrest padding is hand-shaped. The backrest shell is formed from moulded polyurethane foam with light padding in polyurethane foam and polyester wadding. The seasoned beechwood seat is padded with polyurethane foam and pressed felt and has a spring system consisting of elastic belts. The seat cushions are in goose down with polyurethane foam stabilising insert to reduce the sinking effect without compromising on comfort. The four feet are made from solid ash in a wenge stain or moka ash. The external shell of the Nivola sofa and armchair is upholstered in saddle-leather or Pelle Frau® leather while the inside is covered in Pelle Frau® leather or fabric, enriched with fine visible contrast stitching.

The steel frame is airy and slender. The “T”-shaped beam is separated from the crossbars that support the seat in such a way that the padded part of the sofa appears to float in the air. The load-bearing beam, free of joints, is connected by aluminium profiles in a sophisticated play on interconnections that are clearly visible from the side. The high-tech aesthetic of the metal parts, all of which are finished with matt black epoxy powder paint, contrasts with the warmth and softness of the cushions.
Apparently simple in form, the cushions conceal a wealth of details: from the backrest buttons, a recurring detail of 1980's design and nod to traditional upholstery, to the slight tapering of the joint between the seat cushions and the backrest, for the optimum overlapping of the two elements. The cushions, with removable covers in either leather or fabric, are filled with goose down and polyester wadding with a polyurethane foam insert that ensures non-deformability and absolute comfort.

The Cestone sofa was designed to be placed at the center of the living room. In the spotlight are the sofa’s back and sides, parts that cannot usually be counted on to bring added value. Instead, the back and sides of the Cestone sofa are made up of a metal structure upholstered with woven strips of cowhide. Two options of the irregular woven pattern, with strips in two different widths, are available. The cowhide strips can be closely woven, forming a compact surface; or more loosely woven, allowing the underlying upholstery fabric to show through. The resulting ‘checkerboard’ pattern makes a strong visual statement in aesthetically pleasing contrast to the soft, perfectly-proportioned upholstered parts.
The Cestone sofa can be paired with its eponymous coffee tables, with top in Canaletto walnut or ash, in a broad range of stains that create a delightful textural contrast with the warmth of the cowhide.

The new version drops the original Japanese-inspired wood base, taking its soft curves all the way to the floor. A bold gesture meant to emphasize its commitment to hospitality and to the comfort of its namesake through generous proportions and even more exemplary padding. The dedicated upholstery fabrics have also been updated in ‘bold’: the textures have been magnified, as if to further accentuate the soft lines of the padding. Sengu Bold is a floor sofa known for its different, unconventional arrangements, as well as its shared features, like natural materials and colours, achieved by combining different sized modules. Pair centre, corner and end elements, with or without armrests – including the option to add a chaise longue and ottoman – for the utmost in relaxation. To ensure maximum comfort, the seat frame is in plywood and elastic webbing; the seat cushion is composed of two parts that can be disassembled. The internal part is in polyurethane foam with a plant-based variable-density percentage, and the exterior in blown recycled PET fibre encased in recycled PET fabric. To guarantee wellbeing and sustainability, the padding for the loose backrest cushions is made from blown recycled PET fibre, developed thanks to a study conducted by Cassina LAB, a partnership between the Cassina Research and Development Centre and the Poli.design consortium of the Polytechnic University in Milan. A visual dialogue between structure and shapes, the Naviglio seating collection is made up of curved, linear and terminal elements, chaise longues, and ottomans. Synthesis is the project’s essence and starts from its name. The seating base is a riverbed that defines the space to accommodate a backrest/armrest which is as sinuous as a watercourse. As a piece of a puzzle, each shape is ergonomically designed into a single cohesive unit. The idea of comfort itself becomes an armchair. Soriana came into being in 1969, thanks to an intuitive vision by Afra and Tobia Scarpa that was destined to re-write the history of upholstered furniture. By taking advantage of new polyurethane foam forming techniques, they crafted an armchair that, for the first time, needs no internal support but takes its shape from the grip of the metal structure that embraces it. In the sweet spot between formal and informal, it is inviting and open to new lifestyles; in 1970 Soriana was awarded the Compasso d’Oro as a masterpiece of complexity achieved through simple tools. The internal padding based on BioFoam® microspheres, a bioplastic of plant origin, is the result of updating developed by Cassina and Tobia Scarpa as part of the Cassina LAB project to promote wellbeing and sustainable design. The seat’s comfort is further heightened thanks to a 100% recycled blown fibre padding produced from PET recovered from Plastic Bank®.

The bold, self-assured lines of this iconic sofa by Mario Bellini bear witness to the unlimited creative verve of the 1970s. During that same decade, Bellini devised the Libro dell’Arredamento, which launched a contemporary lexicon of design keyed on the primary function of the furniture illustrated. One outcome was a major experimental initiative conducted in association with the Cassina company’s Research Unit that led to the creation of Duc. This highly original and far-reaching design was based on the application of innovative materials to structural technology. The Duc sofa is composed of steel-framed panels in a state-of-the-art high- density polyurethane foam that are hooked on to the base and are then zipped together, top to bottom, on each side. The collection includes an armchair, as well as two-and three-seater sofas, all of them very sophisticated and extremely comfortable.
