You’ve installed beautiful new porcelain tile. Now, it’s important to make sure that you maintain it well so that it continues to shine and be a show stopper.

Whether you’ve installed porcelain tile on your floor, your kitchen backsplash, your shower or somewhere outdoors, it’s important to know the best way to clean porcelain tiles. By keeping them clean, you’ll ensure that they not only continue to look great but stand the test of time.

Below are some tips on how to perform daily maintenance and deep cleaning on porcelain tiles.

What’s the Proper Maintenance for Porcelain Tile Floors?

One of the best parts about porcelain floor tiles are that they are very resistant to stains, scratches and etching. It’s an extremely durable material that’s also water and heat resistant.

At the same time, porcelain tile is not indestructible. It can sustain damage, so you want to make sure that you take proper care of it.

There are some regular maintenance steps that you can take to do so, including simple cleaning and wiping of your porcelain tiles to keep them free of dirt, dust, grime and anything else they come in contact with. This will help to uphold the integrity of the material and keep it looking good.

How to Clean Porcelain Tile Floors

Luckily, it doesn’t take much to keep porcelain tile floors looking good. You can treat them like you would other types of flooring, by sweeping them, vacuuming and other general cleaning.

Since porcelain tile is water resistant, you can use a mixture of mild soap and warm water to keep them extra shiny and glistening.

You can even use a multi-purpose spray cleaner if you need to remove deposits from hard water, mildew or soap scum — especially in bathrooms. This will also help if you need to clean rust off porcelain tiles.

It's important to avoid harsh chemicals that contain ammonia or acids, as they could damage the porcelain tile’s glazed surface and the grout.

Tips for Cleaning Outdoor Porcelain Tiles

If you have porcelain outdoor tiles, there are a few different tips you can follow to keep them clean.

First, make sure that you brush away debris and leaves when the tiles are dry. If you try to do this when they are wet, it’s possible for you to drag dirt or wet mud across the tiles and possible into grout joints.

The best thing to clean outdoor porcelain tiles is a cleaner that’s specifically designed for the material. Again, avoid using any cleaner that has harsh chemicals such as ammonia.

Finally, you can pressure wash outdoor porcelain tiles if they are extra dirty and grimy. This may or may not be necessary, depending on where you live and where the porcelain tile is located.

Cleaning High Gloss Porcelain Tile Floors

If you have high gloss porcelain tile floors, you can follow many of the same steps to keep them clean. To clean polished porcelain tiles, you’ll need water and a bucket, a sponge mop and a cleaner.

For the cleaner, you can opt for a cleaner that’s specifically made for porcelain tile. You can also mix a quarter cup of vinegar with seven liters of hot water. Or, you can use any multi-purpose household cleaner that you have on hand.

First, sweep away any loose dust and dirt from the floor. Then, mop your high gloss porcelain tile floor with whatever cleaning solution that you’ve chosen. Rinse it with clean water, and dry it carefully so it shines.

Cleaning Matte Porcelain Tiles

You’ll follow the same steps above to clean matte porcelain tiles. However, keep in mind that you may need to do this more often depending on the usage.

The matte tiles are more prone to dirt and soap smears than high gloss ones are, especially if they are a darker color. So, keep an eye out for that if you chose matte porcelain tiles.

Regular Cleaning of Porcelain Tiles

It’s always recommended to stay on top of regular cleaning of porcelain tiles, regardless of what finish and color you chose, and where they are installed in your home. By staying on top of this cleaning, it will be much easier to do and will keep your tiles looking and operating like new at all times.

At least once a week, you should make sure that you are sweeping or vacuuming your porcelain tile floors to remove dirt, dust, grime and more. Then, use the solutions described above to give them a little deeper clean on a semi-regular basis.

How often this should be done really depends on the specific usage of your floor and where it is located in your house. High-traffic areas and bathrooms might require more regular cleanings, for instance, than if it’s in a laundry room floor.

What Not to Do When Deep Cleaning Porcelain Tiles

Every now and again, it’s a good idea to deep clean your porcelain tiles. This is especially important if they have a matte finish.

This will help to eliminate any mold and fungus, as well as buildup from hard water. You can use a vinegar and hot water solution by applying it to the floor, letting it sit for 30 minutes or so, and then rinsing and wiping it up.

What you don’t want to do with porcelain tile floors is use any harsh chemicals. You may think these products will keep your porcelain floors as clean and sanitary as possible, but products such as ammonia can do serious damage to your porcelain tile floor.

How to Clean Porcelain Tiles after Installation

The installation process will leave your porcelain tiles a little dirty and grimy. To clean them, you want to first make sure that you remove all excess glue and grout that might be on the surface of the tile.

There are cement removers and epoxy cleansers that you can use for this, which will help to release any glue or grout. Once you do that, simply clean the porcelain tiles with the safe cleaners described above to ensure the tiles don’t have any residue.

By following these tips that we’ve laid out above, you can make sure that your porcelain tile floor is always looking and performing its best, no matter what style, color and finish you chose and no matter where it’s located in your home.
