Included in Unesco's 2016 Cultural Heritage list, the extraordinary architecture of Le Corbusier’s Capitol Complex, designed by Chandigarh in 1951, has received accolades for its celebration of an independent nation open to modernity. The Haute Cour, along with the Secretariat and the Assemblée wing, make up the core of Chandigarh’s Capitol Complex. The rooms were filled with overstuffed armchairs, all exhibiting the same “V” support structure theme. The only exposed wooden parts are the rests, connecting crossbars, and the external joints between the arms and the backrest. The armrests’ padding almost completely envelops them, creating the outline of a rounded, geometric shape, that along with the distinct seat and back cushioning, offer an immediate sense of comfort without abandoning their elegance and simplicity. Cassina’s reissue offers the classic version in teak, and two versions in natural and stained black oak.

The inclusion of the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2016 has aroused great interest in Le Corbusier’s Capitol Complex, an extraordinary architectural work created in Chandigarh in 1951 to celebrate the independence of a nation open to modernity. Among the furniture used in the Legislative Assembly building is this large conference table. Almost as if to evoke the solemn functions of the place, this model has a base made up of two important and graphic solid wood elements with a characteristic “corns entrecroisées” shape. In addition to the historic version with teak top and structure, the Cassina re-edition offers two variants in natural and black stained oak and the option of a glass top in different sizes.

Cassina continues its study of the furniture of the city of Chandigarh and adds the Civil Bench to the Hommage à Pierre Jeanneret Collection; a collection that stands out for its essential forms and simple materials, a balance between modern European ideals and traditional Indian spirit. The bench, produced between 1955 and 1956 for the lodgings and apartments of the members of the Indian city’s Legislature Assembly, consists of three consecutive seat elements supported by a single frontal crossbar and two side supports positioned in the shape of an inverted "V". The seat has the typical weaving that recurs in all the Collection, while the Cassina Research and Development Centre proposes two variants for the wooden frame, in natural oak and stained black oak, in addition to the historic teak version, that are produced in the company’s historic carpentry workshop. Optional cushions are available for added protection and comfort.

The woven backrest and seat, stretched across a wooden frame, are elements common in the area, much like the use of local woods like teak. Similar to the better-known office chair, this armless chair also uses the “V” approach to sidebars, in this case shorter as they do not extend to the arms. Importance, instead, is given to the seating/ backrest sequence in Viennese woven cane, connected with an immense geometric section supported by two wooden profiles, and coplanar legs, that together, are simple and yet, powerful at the same time. Cassina’s reissue offers the classic version in teak, and two versions in natural and stained black oak.

Cassina continues its study of the furniture of the city of Chandigarh and adds the Kanga-roo low armchair to the Hommage à Pierre Jeanneret Collection; a collection that stands out for its essential forms and simple materials, a balance between modern European ide-als and traditional Indian spirit. This low chair, made for the city’s General Hospital Hall but also present in many private houses, is characterised by the "Z" shape of its sides, made up of a sequence of three vaguely triangular coplanar elements placed in continuity. The seat and backrest feature typical weaving inside the wooden frame, for which, in addition to the historic teak version, the Cassina Research and Development Centre offers two fur-ther variants, in natural oak and stained black oak, produced in the company’s historic car-pentry workshop. An optional cushion is available for added protection and comfort.

The Hommage à Pierre Jeanneret Collection, produced in Cassina’s historic carpentry workshop, includes the Capitol Complex Table, Capitol Complex Office Chair, Capitol Complex Chair, Capitol Complex Armchair and from today also the Civil Bench and Kangaroo armchair. The collection is characterised by the Viennese cane seat and backrest within a wooden frame and the use of teak which best evokes the local spirit. In addition to the original teak essence, Cassina also proposes two further versions in natural and black-stained oak.
